La boda

Best short film. Calvià International Film Festival

The theater that months before I had wanted to leave in Paris, I kept pulling the rope, it would not let me escape. Once these works were successfully represented in the main cities of Spain, I did not feel comfortable because I knew that the reverse of the coin would be to get stuck on the itinerary and succumb, as so many other creators have done, to the complacent repetition of their works.

No, I couldn't stay there, I preferred uncertainty and emptiness to accommodation Perhaps, it was time to forget about the theater once and for all and rescue that boy who dreamed of Max Sennett and the slapsticks of the west coast of the early twentieth century.

Yes, now was the time. I decided to produce and direct a trilogy of silent short films. The first of them and whose script I had already  written in Paris, would be called THE WEDDING (1976), but the film needed actors who could revive the body’s energies that he always always longed ford.

So it was that at the then existing Institut del Teatre on Elisabets street I offered a workshop on the art of movement and corporal expression. Of the students who showed up, I was particularly impressed by an actor and dancer, Toni Jodar.

Likewise, of the other young people who participated, I chose others, some of whom should have successful careers in show business, I mean Mingo Ràfols, Cesc Gelabert, Basque dancer Alvaro de la Peña and Jaume Sorribas, the latter from the company of " Els Joglars ".

The theme of this black and white short film revolves around the betrothal and subsequent liberation of a woman played by Lisette Babler who annihilates her husband, played by Cesc Gelabert, to the stupor of the whole society. I want to highlight the interpretive quality of the actors in this film who were able to assimilate very fruitfully the synthesis of knowledge that I transmitted to them. In this work, as you will see, there are other influences closer to the surrealist movement and to automatic writing and image sequences, such as Buñuel and Dalí's "El perro andaluz". Mix of silent movies and surrealism. Subsequently two short films were made in which the same team of actors works, but THE WEDDING would be the most representative.
